Reflection of my Space Project

My space project was on Jupiter. My biggest learning on Jupiter was learning that it had three rings discovered in 1979. This was cool because I never thought it had rings. The biggest thing I know now that I didn't know before about space is that you could never get to the nearest star if it took your whole life. I didn't know that Mercury had 88 days of warmth and 88 days of coldness and night. I did't know that Jupiter's big red spot was bigger than Earth. I didn't know that Mercury was the second hottest planet I always thought it was the hottest. I didn't know that Jupiter's atmosphere was intense enough to rip you apart.

My Space Report On Mercury

For every two orbits, of the sun, which takes around 88 Earth days, Mercury completes three rotations on it's axis.  My planet's name is Mercury. It is named after the Roman god named Mercury who was also the ancient Greek's messenger named Hermes. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and it is 57 million km from the sun at the farthest. Mercury's orbit is 88 Earth days and Mercury's rotation period is about 59 Earth days. Mercury is 4,879 km wide. Mercury's gravity is 3.7 m/s and a 100 pound person would only weigh 37.8 pounds. Mercury's orbit only takes 24% as long as Earth's orbit. Mercury's composition is 70% metals and 30% silicate material, Mercury's atmosphere is very thin. Mercury's temperature is 801 F and 427 C and it is the closest planet to the sun so it is hotter then any other planet. Mercury is one million trillion times hotter than Earth. Mercury is classified as a terrestrial planet which means it is rocky. Mercury looks a little bit like Earth's moon because it is covered with craters caused by space rock impacts. Mercury has no moons or rings because the planet is fairly close to the sun and the sun's strong gravity would interfere with anything in orbit around Mercury and Venus. A human would not to be able to fare on Mercury because it would be too hot or too cold. Also Mercury has no atmosphere. Mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system, every seven years you can see Mercury from Earth.

 What is gravity?
Gravity is something that keeps us down on the ground with a gravitational force and stops us from floating into space. Gravity is responsible for the complexity in the universe. Gravity gives weight  to objects and causes the tides. Gravity represents the attraction between objects. Gravity holds everything close to this planet. What causes gravity is not really known. A person who weighs 200 pounds on Earth would weigh 72 pounds on Mars.

Describe the position, motion and components of our solar system.
First let's start with the planets, well there is mercury that is the first planet. Then there is Venus and then the most important is Earth, then Mars, then Jupiter, then Saturn, Uranus, ( be careful how you say that one) and the last one Neptune. The reason planets revolve or orbit around the sun is because the gravity of the sun keeps them in their orbit. The Earth's mass is 5,973,600,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg.

Compare the Earth's environment V.S Mercury's .
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun so the surface temperature can reach to 840 degrees Fahrenheit. However since Mercury does not have a real atmosphere to entrap any heat at night temperatures can plummet to minus 170 C. About 4 billion years ago an asteroid 60 miles wide hit Mercury with an impact equal to 1 trillion 1 megaton bombs. Another large impact may have helped cause Mercury's odd spin. Earth is the third planet from the sun and it is the largest of the inner planets. Earth was formed about 4.5 million years ago.  The Earth's interior is divided into four layers, which is typical of rocky planets. Earth's surface is unique from other planets because it is the only one which has liquid water in such large quantities. Other surface features such as mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes are formed when large pieces of the Earth's outer layer move slowly by plate tectonics.
Describe the overall scale, structure and age of Mercury.
A graphic showing all 8 planets in our solar system, Mercury through Neptune, to scale where one pixel= 279.6 km. Mercury has a radius of 2439 km and the metallic iron- nickel  core is believed to make to make up about 75% of the distance. In contrast with other terrestrial planets the rest of the planet is made up of a solid rocky layer topped with a thin crust about 100 km thick. Mercury is 4.503 billion years old and the first recorded observation was 265 BC. It is quite old.
Some interesting facts.
A day on Venus is more than a year here. A million Earth's can fit inside the sun. You are taller in space. You can cry in space but your tears don't fall. In space metal sticks together. Mars is home to the tallest mountain in the solar system. Mercury sort of has an atmosphere. According to astronauts space smells like seared stake. Inside an astronauts helmet there is a Velcro patch that serves as a scratcher. NASA scientists have discovered stars cool enough to touch. Humans can live in space unprotected for 30 seconds if they don't hold their breath. In space the sun would appear white.
